Overview

Dr Cassandra Smith, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University (ECU), was recently awarded a prestigious Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship for her cutting-edge research into cardiovascular disease in women.

As part of the Fellowship, Dr Smith was required to create a short video introducing her research. While similar videos in the past have been kept simple and self-recorded, the ECU team felt that there was an opportunity to present something more polished, to not only communicate the heart of Dr Smith’s work, but also reflected the professional standard of research being done at ECU.

Deliverables

  • Direct-to-camera narrative video

The video needed to communicate complex research in a clear and engaging way, and also visually represent the environment Dr Smith works in.

While the core of the video was a solo talking piece, we approached it with a cinematic mindset, planning it as a polished, stylised, and purposeful piece that would feel dynamic and intentional from start to finish.

Our Process

During pre-production, we worked closely with Dr Smith to identify locations that could visually support the story and give a sense of place. Filming took place across several distinctive areas of the ECU Joondalup campus, including the striking Chancellory Building and the university’s research lab.

To bring energy and movement into the piece, we adopted a walk-and-talk filming style. This meant having Dr Smith walk naturally toward the camera while speaking, with the gimbal tracking in sync. This gave the video a sense of momentum and made it feel like the viewer was being brought along for the journey.

This project is a great example of how we adapt creative direction to meet both messaging and visual impact goals.
