Overview
The Centre for Health & Ageing at UWA, in collaboration with Connect Vic Park, commissioned Cypher Studios to produce a short documentary-style explainer video to highlight the CONNECT research trial. This study explored how community hubs can support older adults in improving their physical activity, social connectedness, and overall wellness.
The aim was to communicate the purpose and impact of the research to both academic stakeholders and the broader community including participants, future partners, and potential funders.

Our Process
Pre-Production
We did a location scout to get a sense of the environment we would be working in. Because of scheduling and space constraints at the venue, we knew we would need to work with a mix of natural and overhead lighting. This meant choosing lighting gear that gave us enough control to shape and idrect light effectively, even in less-than-ideal conditions. It was important for us to maintain a clean, professional look while still keeping the things efficient and mobile
Production
We filmed across a full day with a lean 3-person crew, which allowed us to move quickly between setups without compromising quality. The day involved a mix of interviews and real-time filming of CONNECT Vic Park activities like wellness classes and social gatherings.
With three participant interviews and two pieces to camera, we had to be really strategic with how we schedule the day. To save time and avoid constant resetting, we planned the interview flow and camera setups in advance, making sure lighting and gear transitions were seamless throughout the day.
Post-Production
Editing this video was as much about what we left out as what we kept in. We had a wealth of powerful soundbites and emotional stories to draw from but the challenge was to create something that felt meaningful without dragging on.
We carefully selected key audio moments that highlighted each person’s journey, the challenges they faced, and how the CONNECT program helped them reconnect with their community. The goal was to tell a story that felt uplifting and authentic, while keeping the pacing tight to hold the viewer’s attention from start to finish.
