Overview

We were engaged by researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) to produce a series of videos showcasing the Happy Parenting Program — a research initiative focused on supporting parents of young children during the earliest and most formative years of their child’s development.

The aim of the program is to explore how different parenting approaches, such as outdoor play-based learning and the respectful parenting method, impact key areas like stress management, emotional bonding, mealtime dynamics, and parenting confidence.

Our task was to bring this to life through a compelling highlight video and a series of short social media clips.

Our Process

Pre-production

Since we did not have access to the location ahead of time, we relied on Google Maps photos to plan our shoot.

Knowing that we would be filming outdoors for all the interviews, we made the call to bring in an Aputure 1200D which enabled us to balance strong natural light without overexposing our subjects. This allowed us to maintain a consistent look throughout the shoot, even as lighting conditions changed.

We also coordinated closely with the photographer to ensure we both had adequate time and space to capture our respective content.

Production

This was a fast-paced and dynamic shoot, spanning four different groups and multiple interviews across parents and researchers.

We chose to film all interviews and pieces to camera in a single outdoor location in the community centre to avoid spending time on multiple light resets. The backdrop provided great natural context to the research project while our lighting setup gave us full control of the image.

As expected with a parenting-focused shoot, filming interviews was not without its challenges — crying babies, noisy toddlers, and the unpredictable nature of working with children meant we had to stay flexible and adapt our questions quickly to keep things natural but concise.

Post-Production

Editing was about finding the perfect balance between depth and brevity. We wanted to tell a story that conveyed the emotional and educational impact of the program, without dragging or losing engagement.

While the content of the interviews was strong, we had to carefully edit around mistakes, hesitations, and repetition to keep the pacing tight and polished.

This resulted in a video that was authentic, emotive, and aligned with the client’s vision for the project.
