Overview
Each year, UWA Careers and Employability brings together students, alumni and industry professionals for the Career Mentor Link & MBA Breakfast Launch, marking the beginning of its annual mentoring program.
For the 2026 launch, Cypher Studios was engaged to create a suite of visual assets that could do more than document the morning. The photography and videography needed to help UWA Careers and Employability promote the Career Mentor Link program throughout the year across digital and printed marketing materials.
Our scope included event photography, a highlight video and vox pop interviews, with a lead photographer and lead videographer working together throughout the event.
The objective was to capture the energy and scale of the launch while creating polished, versatile content that reflected the connections being formed between mentors and mentees.
Deliverables
Event Highlight Video
Combining candid coverage of the breakfast launch with pre-planned vox pop interviews
Captured a mix of wide establishing shots, attendee interactions and close-up details to showcase both the scale and atmosphere of the event
Vox pop interviews filmed with selected mentors and mentees to communicate the value and experience of the Career Mentor Link program
Edited to balance a polished, commercial feel with the genuine energy and interactions of the live event
Event Photography
Engaging brand photography capturing mentors, mentees, speakers, networking and key moments throughout the event
A diverse mix of wide, medium and close-up imagery featuring different ages, backgrounds and participant groups
Selected images intentionally composed with negative space for use in flyers, digital posters, pull-up banners, social media and other marketing materials
Authentic interactions captured using a combination of telephoto and wide-aperture lenses to create natural, visually engaging hero imagery
Our Process
Creating a vox pop setup within a live event
One of the first considerations on arrival was identifying the right location for the vox pop interviews.
We wanted the setting to visually communicate the turnout and atmosphere of the morning, while still providing enough separation from the main event to achieve clean, usable audio.
Once a location was selected, our videographer established a compact interview setup using our portable lighting kit. With a deliberately small footprint, the setup could be assembled quickly without disrupting attendee movement and packed away as soon as the interviews were completed.
With interviewees and questions organised beforehand by the UWA Careers and Employability team, we could focus on efficiently capturing consistent, polished responses while the wider event continued around us.
Balancing polished video with a genuine event atmosphere
Our videographer intentionally captured a combination of wide establishing shots, medium interactions and tighter details.
Wide shots communicated the scale and turnout of the launch, while closer perspectives brought attention to the conversations and individual interactions happening throughout the room.
Combined with the vox pop interviews, this created a final highlight video that feels polished and commercially considered while retaining the genuine atmosphere of the event.
The result gives UWA Careers and Employability a piece of content that not only recaps the launch, but also helps communicate what participating in the Career Mentor Link program actually feels like.
Photographing with future marketing applications in mind
Our photography approach centred around authentic interactions without making attendees feel overly conscious of the camera.
Using a combination of telephoto and wide-aperture lenses allowed our photographer to work at a comfortable distance while capturing natural expressions and moments between mentors and mentees. Shallow depth of field was also used to separate subjects from the environment, creating stronger imagery for future campaign materials.
Rather than waiting only for obvious moments, we actively looked for genuine conversations, expressions and interactions throughout the event.
We also captured a broad mix of mentors and mentees across different ages and backgrounds, giving the UWA Careers and Employability team a more versatile image library when creating future campaigns for different audiences.
Lighting was kept intentionally natural. A combination of available ambient light and bounced flash helped maintain soft, flattering illumination inside the ballroom without creating the harsher look or distraction of direct flash.
Composition was equally important. For selected photographs, subjects were intentionally positioned with clean negative space around them, providing room for headlines, campaign messaging and graphic elements when the images are later used across flyers, digital advertising, posters and pull-up banners.
By considering the final application of the content while photographing the event, we were able to deliver a versatile library of visual assets designed to support the Career Mentor Link program long after the breakfast launch had concluded.
